How Do I Download eBooks and Audiobooks

eBook Guide

The video and print tutorials below will describe how to checkout, download and transfer eBooks from Trails Regional Library's collection to your device. Each explanation varies slightly from the others based on the device described. Before you begin, you must have a Trails Regional Library card number. If you need your card number, contact your local branch for assistance.

OverDrive Media Console (OMC) App

This explanation concerns how to use the free OverDrive Media Console App which can be downloaded and installed to some mobile devices. For download and installation instructions, search the app store on your device or go to OverDrive's download page.

Before you begin, you will need:

  1. Tap "Get Books" or tap "Menu" and then "Get Books".
  2. You may be asked to setup your library. You may search by library name ("Trails Regional Library") or location ("Corder", etc.). Once you've found your library, tap it to select it's collection.
  3. Once you're in Trails' collection, you should sign in using your library card. Tap "Login" in the top right of the screen, choose Trails Regional Library as your library and input your card number. If you need your card number contact your local branch for more information.
  4. Once you're signed in, you can search for books using the standard search box or advanced search. (Tip: if you're having trouble finding books, try the advanced search and check the box marked "Only titles with copies available")
  5. When you find a book you'd like to check out, tap "Add to Cart". (Tip: it's generally best to use the Adobe ePub option which allows you to manage the entire process within the OMC app)
  6. When you're done browsing, view your cart by tapping "My Cart" and then tap "Proceed to Checkout".
  7. You can then select either a 7-day or 14-day lending period for your book/s and tap "Confirm Checkout". 
  8. When checked out, you can then tap "Download" to download the book to your device. 
  9. Once it has downloaded, you can read it by tapping "Bookshelf" or "Menu" and then "Bookshelf", finding the book on the bookshelf, and tapping it to open. 
  10. In order to return your book, tap the "+" to the right of the book and select "Return/Delete". From the menu that pops-up, select "Return and Delete" and the book will be removed from your device and returned to the library's collection. If you don't follow this step, the book will return itself at the end of the lending period you selected in step 7. 

Amazon Kindle

This explanation concerns how to use Trails Regional Library's downloadable eBook and Audiobook collection with Amazon Kindle eReaders and Tablets (Fire, Fire HD, etc.)

  1. First access Trails Regional Library's downloadable eBook and audiobook collection by clicking here.
  2. Once you're in Trails' collection, you should sign in using your library card number. Click "Sign In" in the top right of the screen, choose Trails Regional Library as your library and input your card number. If you need your card number contact your local branch for more information.
  3. Once you're signed in, you can search for books using the standard search box or advanced search. (Tip: if you're having trouble finding books, try the advanced search and check the box marked "Available Now")
  4. When you find a book you'd like to check out, tap "Add to Cart". (Tip: Make sure you put the Kindle version of the book in your cart)
  5. When you're done browsing, view your cart by tapping "My Cart" and then tap "Proceed to Checkout".
  6. You can then select either 7-day or 14-day lending period for your book/s and tap "Confirm Checkout". 
  7. When checked out, you can then tap "Get For Kindle" to download the book to your device. 
  8. Your browser will automatically take you to Amazon.com's page for the book you checked out. Click "Get Library Book" on the right to continue.
  9. You'll be asked to sign in to your Amazon.com account. 
  10. Once you're signed in, you'll be asked to select to which device you'd like to transfer the borrowed book. Select the right device and click "Continue".
  11. You should be given a message telling you the book will be automatically downloaded to your device when it is connected to wifi. (Tip: Occasionally you'll have to use your Kindle's menu and choose "Sync and Check for Items" in order for the book to be downloaded)
  12. When the book is downloaded, it will show up in your library as any other book would. You can then select the title or tap the cover to open the book and read it. 
  13. You can return the book when you're finished by going to Amazon.com, signing in, choosing "Manage your Kindle" from your account screen and choosing "Return Library Book" from the "Actions" drop-down menu next to the appropriate book.

Barnes and Noble Nook or other ePub devices

This explanation concerns how to use Trails Regional Library's downloadable eBook collection with Barnes and Noble Simple Touch or other ePub devices such as the Sony Reader and Kobo. In order to follow these steps, you'll need Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer. If you don't have it installed, you can get instructions on downloading and configuring this software by clicking here.

  1. First access Trails Regional Library's collection by clicking here.
  2. Once you're in Trails' collection, you should sign in using your library card number. Click "Sign In" in the top right of the screen, choose Trails Regional Library as your library and input your card number. If you need your card number contact your local branch for more information.
  3. Once you're signed in, you can search for books using the standard search box or advanced search. (Tip: if you're having trouble finding books, try the advanced search and check the box marked "Available Now")
  4. When you find a book you'd like to check out, click "Add to Cart". (Tip: Make sure you put the Kindle version of the book in your cart)
  5. When you're done browsing, view your cart by clicking "My Cart" and then click "Proceed to Checkout".
  6. You can then select either 7-day or 14-day lending period for your book/s and click "Confirm Checkout". 
  7. If you haven't yet connected your device to your computer via the USB cable provided with your device, you should do so now. 
  8. When checked out, you can then download the book by clicking "Download". 
  9. You'll be asked if you'd like to open the file in Adobe Digital Editions, click "OK". 
  10. Adobe Digital Editions should automatically open and begin downloading your eBook. This normally takes a few moments but the time depends on your internet connection speed.
  11. Once it has downloaded, you can simply drag and drop the item from your library to your Nook or other device. Your device should show up in Adobe Digital Editions as a bookshelf with a title that indicates the type of device (for example, a bookshelf named "Nook").
  12. When it has transferred, the borrowed title should show up in your device's library as any other eBook would. 

Audiobook Guide

The instructions below will describe how to checkout, download and transfer audiobooks from Trails Regional Library's collection to your device. Before you begin, you must have the OverDrive Media Console installed on your mobile device or on the computer you use to download and transfer the audiobook. You must also have your Trails Regional Library card number. If you need your card number, contact your local branch for assistance.

OverDrive Media Console App

This explanation concerns how to use the free OverDrive Media Console Mobile App, which can be downloaded and installed to iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod), Android devices (phones, tablets, etc.) and Barnes and Noble Nook Colors and Nook Tablets, to download audiobooks. If you don't have the OMC App, search the respective app store on your device for more information or go to OverDrive's download page.

  1. From the OMC App's home screen, tap "Get Books" or tap "Menu" and then "Get Books".
  2. You may be asked to setup your library. You may search by library name ("Trails Regional Library") or location ("Corder", etc.). Once you've found your library, tap it to select it's collection.
  3. Once you're in Trails' collection, you should Login using your library card. Tap "Login" in the top right of the screen, choose Trails Regional Library as your library and input your card number. If you need your card number contact your local branch for more information.
  4. Once you're signed in, you can search for audiobooks using the standard search box or advanced search. (Tip: if you're having trouble finding books, try the advanced search and check the box marked "Available Now")
  5. When you find an audiobook you'd like to check out, tap "Add to Cart".
  6. When you're done browsing, view your cart by tapping "My Cart" and then tap "Proceed to Checkout".
  7. You can then select either 7-day or 14-day lending period for your book/s and tap "Confirm Checkout". 
  8. When checked out, you can then tap "Download" to download the book to your device. 
  9. Because audiobooks are downloaded as multiple, large files, it will take some time to download the audiobook. How long will depend on your internet connection speed. To check the progress of the download tap "Downloads" or "Menu" and then "Downloads".
  10. Once it has downloaded, you can listen to the audiobook by tapping "Bookshelf" or "Menu" and then "Bookshelf", finding the book on the bookshelf, and tapping it to open. 
  11. In order to return your audiobook, tap the "+" to the right of the book and select "Return/Delete". From the menu that pops-up, select "Return and Delete" and the book will be removed from your device and returned to the library's collection. If you don't follow this step, the book will return itself at the end of the lending period you selected in step 7. 

Computer

These instructions describe downloading audiobooks using a personal computer and transferring them to devices using the free OverDrive Media Console. If you don't have the OMC installed, click here to download and install this software.

  1. Go to Trails Regional Library's collection of downloadable audiobooks by clicking here.
  2. Once you're in Trails' collection, you should Login using your library card. Click "Sign In" in the top right of the screen, choose Trails Regional Library as your library and input your card number. If you need your card number contact your local branch for more information.
  3. Once you're signed in, you can search for books using the standard search box or advanced search. (Tip: if you're having trouble finding audiobooks, try the advanced search and check the box marked "Available Now")
  4. When you find a book you'd like to check out, click "Add to Cart".
  5. When you're done browsing, view your cart by clicking "My Cart" and then click "Proceed to Checkout".
  6. You can then select either 7-day or 14-day lending period for your audiobook/s and click "Confirm Checkout". 
  7. When checked out, you can then click "Download" to begin downloading the audiobook to your computer. 
  8. You should be asked if you'd like to open the file with the OverDrive Media Console (OMC). Click "OK".
  9. The OMC should start and then ask you which parts of the audiobook you'd like to download. Select the parts you'd like to download and click "OK".
  10. A green bar will appear along the bottom edge of the OMC to let you know how the download is progressing. The speed at which the parts download depends on your internet connection speed.
  11. Once it has downloaded, you can either listen to it on your computer or begin transferring it to your device. If transferring, connect your device to your computer via USB, highlighting the audiobook you'd like to transfer and clicking "Transfer".
  12. Click "Next" to start the transfer process and the OMC should attempt to find your device. If it is found, the OMC will then ask you which parts you'd like to transfer. Check the parts to be transferred and click "Next".
  13. When it has finished transferring, click "Finish".
  14. You may now disconnect your device and listen to the borrowed audiobook.
  15. You can't currently return audiobooks early from the OverDrive Media Console, but your borrowed audiobook will automatically be returned at the end of your lending period chosen in step 6.
